Broughton-in-Furness

About the location

Broughton-in-Furness is a beautiful, traditional market village located on the Southwestern border of the Lake District National Park. As such it is quiet and tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the towns, but the tourist towns of Coniston, Ambleside, Grasmere and Bowness-on-Windermere are still very accessible within a 30-40 minute drive of the cottage.

For an adventure closer to Broughton-in-Furness, you will find beaches at Askam and Silecroft, the trails on the fells of the Duddon, Dunnerdale and Esk Valleys, Golf courses at Dunnerholm and Eskdale, and attractions at Muncaster Castle, and the Ravenglass Railway. The Duddon Valley is lovely for walks, too, with the traditional Newfield Inn at the end of the valley serving great food and real ales in front of the roaring fire.

Right at your doorstep, you will find lots of local history as the village itself dates back to the 11th century; the oldest building is considered St. Mary's Church. The focal point of the Georgian market square is the obelisk, built to mark the jubilee of King George III in 1810. Also surviving these days are the stocks for misbehavers and the fish slabs nearby used to sell fish caught in the nearby River Duddon.

The best way to travel in this area is by car, bicycle or foot. But if you are travelling by train, the local station is Foxfield Train Station. The railway station is a "request stop" on the scenic Cumbrian Coast Line. You will need to purchase tickets ahead of time, as this is an unmanned train station, and pre-arrange a taxi to take you from Foxfield to Broughton-in-Furness.
