The Screes

Wasdale
Sleeps 4
Bedrooms 2
Dog Friendly

We are sure The Screes will be a popular property for anyone looking to enjoy some of Britain's most dramatic mountain and lake scenery. This dog-friendly two-bedroom apartment has been fitted out for comfort and ease of use, and couldn't be handier for anyone planning their ascent of England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike.

The open-plan lounge/dining area is a good sociable space and the kitchen is well laid out with modern kitchen units and appliances. It has been known to rain sometimes in this area, so you may be making use of the useful hall area for drying your wet outdoor gear. The bathroom has a good-size walk-in shower and when it's time for bed, you'll find a peaceful haven in either the double, or the twin bedrooms. All the rooms are on ground floor level. When the weather is kind, step outside into the communal garden and marvel at the mountain and lake views. You will be gazing at The Screes (the steep stone-strewn slope running down into Wastwater) after which the property is named, and if you look left, you will see the view of the trio of mountains at the head of Wasdale which was bestowed with the title of Britain's Favourite View back in 2007 (the view hasn't changed since then!).

Whilst you are in a sublime, peaceful location here, you aren't too far from civilisation. It's not too far to drive if you fancy a pub meal, a visit to pretty seaside villages of Ravenglass and St Bees, and the attractions of neighbouring valley Eskdale, such as the Ravenglass and Eskdale narrow gauge railway. The village of Gosforth is a 13 minute drive away and has a bakery, and pubs. Those who visit the Lakes frequently, often miss coming over to this wilder and quieter side of the National Park. Some say, this is the 'connoisseur's Lake District - spectacular, unspoilt, and peaceful, with a landscape that will stay with you forever.

Wasdale

About the location

Wasdale is a place once seen, never forgotten. Here, nature holds sway in, arguably, the Lake District's most unspoilt valley. Check out the incredible mountain and lake scenery - it's an area of superlatives - England's highest mountain Scafell Pike (978 metres/ 3210ft), England's deepest lake, and England's smallest church. Hikers head to the head of the valley to start the most popular and shortest of the routes to ascend Scafell Pike and nearby Great Gable. Climbers rate Wasdale as one of Britain's best area for challenges, including the iconic Napes Needle. Let's not forget Wastwater and the striking scree slopes that disappear into the depths. These slopes can light up in the sunset to give you an unforgettable photogenic view and there is plenty of easy access to the lake shores. If it's hot, Wastwater is guaranteed to be the coolest place for a wild swim, while adventurous divers head for the 'Gnome Garden' 50 metres underwater (we kid you not!).

There are good pubs within a few miles at Nether Wasdale and at the Wasdale Head Inn where many head before, or after, their ascent of Scafell Pike. There's also a great cafe and farm shop at The Sawmill, which is a ten-minute drive away. Good to know that there is a free(!) seasonal bus service on weekends and bank holidays that goes from Ravenglass to Wasdale Head and passes right by The Screes. Muncaster Castle and Owl Centre is a great place to visit and the grounds are especially impressive in spring, with masses of flowering rhododendrons. No visit to this area is complete without a trip on the Ravenglass and Eskdale narrow gauge railway, which winds up the Eskdale valley, as it has done since 1875.

If the weather isn't ideal for the fell tops, there's plenty to do within a short drive - The coast is not far (10 miles to Ravenglass and 14 miles to St Bees), a great dog-friendly beach at Seascale where there is also a Co-op, cafe, and pharmacy. It's just a little further to the Georgian town of Whitehaven, where you will find The Rosehill Theatre, the famous Michael Moon Bookshop, The Beacon Visitor Centre, and all the usual town facilities and supermarkets.
